On the Centennial Anniversary of the 1925 Iraqi Constitution, Dhaw Center Organizes a Lecture on Constitutional Life in Iraq

The Dhaw Center for Development and Democracy Support organized a lecture titled “Constitutional Life in Iraq: Its Strengths and Challenges.”
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Ali Issa Al-Yaqoubi, Professor of Constitutional Law at the College of Law / Al-Nahrain University, on Tuesday, 4/11/2025, at the Center’s headquarters.

The event was attended by several academics, representatives of Iraqi research institutions, and government advisors.
The speaker discussed the evolution of Iraqi constitutions since the establishment of the modern Iraqi state in 1921, and focused in particular on the 2005 Constitution — including its historical background, drafting process, and the circumstances surrounding its adoption.

Dr. Ali Issa also highlighted potential pathways for amending the current constitution in ways that better serve Iraq’s political landscape in the present time.
